Film Industry: Distribution

Distribution in the film industry relates to the Marketting of the product, the duplication and the eventual bringing to the cinema.

Once a film has been created it is the job of Film distributors to bring those films into the movie marketplace. It is the duty of the distributor to make sure people going to the cinema have already decided that they want to see the film that they represent. Very few cinema goers arrive and decide the film then and there, it is clever advertising and good publicity that really attracts a large audience.

Blockbusters: Warner, 2oth Century Fox. The films made by these big names distribute their product within their own vertically integrated companies so that they get the film concept accepted immediately and the advertising is done by the same company. Although these companies have guaranteed chances of bringing a film to the cinema, it is a bit of a cheat and does not guarantee a huge success.

Independant: Lionsgate, Metrodome, Momentum. The film makers work hard to make a great film to bring to festivals. These people rely on the distribution companies to buy their concept and distribute it to cinema. This process is more of a transaction as in many situations the film makers are quite literally selling their film so that another company can do the rest.

Distributors are experts in the markets who represent the companies in presenting the film to the right audience. There are two main jobs that they must do before the advertising campaigns can begin:
1. They first decide the films USP (Unique selling point)
2. They pinpoint the films audience and attract big groups.

The average cinema-goer falls into one of two groups, the 15-24 year old being the most common or the family groups. Although this group is rather limited distributors need to grab as large an audience as possible so they try to attract everyone they can. They also decide the films release date so that it is relevant to genre and availabillity to the audience. This is important because in the modern day film industries films are released all the time, 52 weeks a year.
